Pastor Josh Laryea Exposes the High Stakes of Hosting Global Gospel Artists in Ghana
In an era where gospel music and ministry intersect with business, Pastor Josh Laryea is pulling back the curtain on what it takes to host global gospel icons in Ghana.
Speaking passionately during an interview with Ghanaian actress Nana Ama McBrown on Onua Showtime, Pastor Laryea revealed surprising truths about the business side of gospel shows, including the staggering costs and behind-the-scenes efforts involved.
Pastor Josh Laryea, Lead Pastor of Kharis Centre International, shared his groundbreaking journey of organizing one of Ghana’s most memorable gospel events. Reflecting on his experience, he emphasized the level of dedication and investment required to bring international gospel artists, such as Grammy-winning singer Israel Houghton, to Ghana.
“People don’t realize the financial weight of hosting global gospel artists,” Pastor Laryea remarked. “I brought Israel Houghton—$75,000 just as an appearance fee. That doesn’t include business-class tickets for him and his team or additional costs for rehearsals and sound engineers.”
He explained how such events demand careful planning and resource mobilization. “It’s not just about ministry; it’s business too. We had to sell tickets, organize sponsorships, and ensure all contracts were honored before the event could take place.”
Pastor Laryea candidly highlighted the challenges of working within Ghana’s gospel industry, where resources and funding are often limited. Despite this, he and his team managed to host a spectacular event, showcasing what’s possible when faith meets strategic planning.
A Call to Action for Gospel Artists and Churches:
The pastor also called on Ghanaian gospel musicians and churches to “wake up” and adopt a more professional approach to the gospel music industry. He stressed that excellence in event organization not only honors God but also elevates the industry’s standards, making it attractive to both local and international audiences.
“This is why we need to invest in the gospel industry,” he urged. “We must create a system that values gospel musicians and ensures sustainability. It’s not just about singing; it’s about creating experiences that transform lives and inspire faith.”
Pastor Josh Laryea’s candid revelations are a wake-up call for Ghana’s gospel music industry. His journey of bringing global icons to Ghana illustrates the delicate balance between ministry and business—a balance that, when achieved, can propel gospel music to new heights both locally and globally.
Will the gospel music industry in Ghana rise to the challenge of excellence? Pastor Laryea’s vision suggests it’s not only possible but necessary.
